Oxytocin is a small brain-made hormone that triggers uterine contractions and milk release when it enters the bloodstream, and may influence social behavior and mood when it acts inside the brain, though getting it into the brain from a nasal spray or injection is difficult and the research results have been largely mixed.
Reported side effects
IV oxytocin carries serious risks including uterine rupture, water intoxication with seizures, and fetal complications; intranasal research use is generally mild, with nasal irritation, headache, fatigue, and occasional mood changes being the most commonly reported issues.
Who should avoid it
Pregnant people (outside of hospital-supervised induction), those with cardiovascular disease, hyponatremia, hypersensitivity to oxytocin or chlorobutanol, and anyone on lithium or prostaglandin analogues should not use oxytocin without direct clinician supervision.
